BrainStem technology is a foundational tool for bridging the technological gap between hardware and software systems.  BrainStem controllers gather and relay peripheral information to other systems, which may be a host computers, additional microcontrollers and/or additional devices.  The core BrainStem process is based around foundational data gathering, interpretation and transmitting processes present in the human nervous system.

BrainStem is the ideal controller for hierarchical control.  It builds on networking concepts by relaying information across industry standardized protocols such as serial and I2C.  Each controller has an embedded run-time kernel that allows scriptable application execution, reflexive software creation and direct IO access using a structured packet format through standard communication protocols.  BrainStem technology is used every day by research organizations, academics, hobbyists and commercial OEM applications.

Acroname designed BrainStem technology to provide powerful computers easy access for interfacing to sensors and actuators.  Since devices exist across such a wide application range, the BrainStem controllers were designed to be as generalized and adaptable as possible.  This included developing cross platform interface software, defining and publishing interconnect standards, selecting a common form factor and focusing on expandability.  Additionally, a programming language was developed to execute directly on-board the controller modules.  Since the scope of the technology is very broad, a large number of skills have been necessary to create a foundational core technology that includes:

  • Fundamental understanding of low level interactions across a wide range of devices.
  • Embedded firmware development
  • Circuit board design
  • Design for manufacturability
  • Compiler design and deployment
  • High level programming APIs
  • Cross platform software development

Technical information including hardware details, API documentation, examples and reference manuals are available in the BrainStem Central pages.
