This I2C Text-to-Speech Synthesizer is a fantastic way to enable your robot to communicate. The built in speaker means all you need to add is power and communication. The module also includes serial and parallel connections as well.

More Details:

With the Devantech Text-to-speech module, you can get your robot to talk back. This module can store up to 30 phrases (with up to 1925 characters total) in the module and send arbitrary text to the module and it will say whatever you enter. It even pronounces numbers correctly!

The SP03 module includes an audio amplifier, a 3 Volt regulator and level conversion to 5 Volts, a PIC processor to provide easy communication with your host processor and even a small 40mm speaker, along with the Winbond WTS701 speech chip. Interfaces include an RS232 serial interface, I2C bus interface, and a parallel interface. The parallel interface is used for selecting one of 30 predefined phrases. Arbitrary text may be sent to the module via the RS232 and I2C interfaces. This text can be spoken on-the-fly. This general interface creates terrific potential for generating natural language communication from the robot based on varying sensor and algorithm data.

You can also get a handy Serial Interface Cable for your SP03.

To send text to the SP03 module, you can use the BrainStem Console Program, which will work on Windows, MacOS X, PalmOS, WinCE and Linux. We have a Getting Started Guide for using the SP03 with the BrainStem Console Program. If you are new to the BrainStem software, you can find getting started guides for the Console Program, and others, in the BrainStem Getting Started section. Please note that you do not need a BrainStem controller in order to use this software.

Using the Console Program to send text commands to the SP03, as seen on MacOS X.

A Windows specific program, SP03.EXE, is also available, from Devantech, for loading the 30 predefined phrases into the SP03.
