Garcia Physical TourIndex

The Garcia is a very refined robot with minimal external components and a robust chassis.  There are several key features accessible from the exterior of the robot that are described here.  In addition, the internal layout is described as well.

Head LEDs

There are a series of five LED (light emitting diodes) across the front of the Garcia robot's head.  These provide some basic status and are describe below:

GP Heartbeat The heartbeat indicator for the GP 2.0 module inside Garcia.  Whe this indicator is blinking slowly, it indicates a live and health link to the host computer running the Garcia API or other Garcia programs.
Power LED The power indicator should be on when the robot is turned on and there is adequate battery charge.  This is the first check if things don't seem to be working.
IR Transmitter The IR transmitter outputs the IR signal for sending data to other Garcia robots or any IR device that is supported in the GP 2.0 IR protocols.
User LED This yellow LED can be turned on and off by the user via the Garcia API as a basic debugging or communication indicator.
Moto Heartbeat This green LED indicates when the Garcia Moto module is working and communicating with the BrainStem network in the robot.

Head Panel

The back of the Garcia head has a small panel of controls, connections, and a fuse.  These are described below:

Fuse The fuse protects all the Garcia circuitry and motors from an over-current or short circuit situation.  Replacement fuses are not typically required as current monitoring is performed internally but extra fuses are included as a precaution with each robot.  These are standard automotive style fuses and can be unplugged for inspection and replacment.
User Button This button can be used to initiate simple programs or trigger sequences in the Garcia API.  This button can be held down on power-up to run the built-in demo program which has the robot randomly wander around a room with no host computer intervention.
Charger Jack The charger jack allows a recharge of the Garcia battery without opening up the robot.  When charging, all power is cut to the robot so the robot will be idle when plugged in.  A charge cable is provided with each robot to connect the charger to this charging jack.
Power Switch This is the single switch that powers up the entire robot.  When the battery is properly charged and plugged in, the robot will be ready to use with this switch turned on.  The red LED in front of the robot's head will be turned on when the robot has good power.
