The BrainStem modules communicate with the host computer via a serial connection.  Any programmable device with a serial port can work with a BrainStem Module but some need to have the RS-232 serial voltages converted to the CMOS/TTL-compatible serial port on the BrainStem modules.  This simple interface circuit is typically embedded in the cable for a given host device.

To use the BrainStem on a computer (Mac, Windows or Linux), you need the Serial Interface Connector, or the BrainStem Interface Assembly, and the USB to Serial Adapter.

If you are not certain about whether to build a cable or purchase one preassembled, review the cable building instructions
