| Downloading WinCE Software This guide gives some specific instructions for downloading software to your WinCE 3.0 (Pocket PC) device from the Acroname Download Center . Getting the File The Acroname Download Center lets you select between several different platforms, targets, and applications. The platform category refers to what machine you will be using for downloading. For Pocket PC this will always be WinCE. Target refers to what CPU will actually run the software. This depends more on what you are downloading. The processor in your WinCE dictates which target you need. The HP Jornada uses the SH3 processor. Compaq's iPaq uses the ARM processor. Select the file you would like to download and you should then see a screen describing the file in more detail. On the right is a file icon and size. Click these to move on to the license agreement. Read this carefully as this is legally binding. Once you have accepted the license agreement, the file will start to download. Your browser will most likely ask you for a location to save the file. For BrainStemâ„¢ downloads, we suggest you create a folder named "Acroname" in the "Program Files" directory of your main hard disk (likely C:). Save the file to this folder or any of your choice. The file you are saving is a WinZip archive file. Once you are finished, you should have a file that ends in ".zip" within folder you selected for downloading to. You have now successfully downloaded the file. Uncompressing the File You will need to use the common WinZip utility to uncompress the files. This utility is typically installed on most Windows machines. If it is installed, you can normally just double-click on the ".zip" file you installed and the WinZip program should automatically launch and allow you to extract the archive. If you are having trouble starting WinZip or do not have it installed, you can get a free copy at from the WinZip website. Once WinZip is running, it should show a list of files. Right-click on the one of the list items with your mouse and choose the "Select All" option from the popup menu. Optionally, you can use the "control-A" combination on your keyboard to get select the entire list. Now extract the files by either right-clicking on an item again and selecting "Extract" from the popup menu or by clicking the extract button. WinZip Will ask you for a location to extract the files to. Select the same folder you downloaded the original ".zip" file to (typically C:\Program Files\Acroname\). The files will quickly decompress and be placed in the directory structure below the folder you select.
Moving the file(s) to your WinCE Device Now that you have the files in place on your PC, you can now move them over to the handheld. This is done using the Microsoft Active Sync application. Start up Active Sync and select "explore" from the File menu. This will open an explorer window showing the contents of your handheld (the handheld must be in the cradle). Take the brainstem folder from your PC and place it under the "Program Files" directory on your handheld. Once synchronized, you should be able to run the programs directly from the folder named "aBinary" on your WinCE device from the File Explorer application. You may want to create shortcuts for frequently used programs and place them in the folder named "Start Menu" for easier access. Conclusion This should install your application and you should now be able to begin using it. If you have trouble with the download process, decompressing the archive, or understanding this document, please mail us and let us know.
